I would like to spread the word about a unique Irish music event coming to the Cedar Cultural Center on Monday Oct 6, 7:30pm (
www.thecedar.org), and then coming to the Humphrey Theater at St. John's University in Collegeville on Tuesday October 7th, 8:00pm (
www.csbsju.edu/finearts). ;
The show is called "Piperlink" and is about the Uilleann Pipes, which are Irish Bagpipes. These are the bagpipes heard in the group The Chieftains, played by Paddy Keenan, featured in Riverdance, and can be seen in the steerage dance scene in the movie Titanic.
The show is direct from Ireland, and presented by Na Píobairí Uilleann (the association of uilleann pipers based in Dublin, Ireland), and will not only include performances by some of Ireland's leading pipers (Tommy Keane and Gay McKeon), but will also give the audience a chance to interact with the players and the instrument. Following an audio visual introduction and a demonstration to show how the pipes work, eminent folklorist Seán Donnelly will conduct a entertaining talk on the history of the instrument, navigating a clear path through the development of the pipes, their evolution, different styles of piping, the great players and the famous 'piping' tunes.
Afterward the audience will be invited to try out a practice set of pipes and participate in an extensive question and answer session about all aspects of piping. Other topics will include modern musical innovations using the pipes, and their use in the accompaniment of songs and in ensembles.
This original artistic experience will be introduced by one of Ireland's best known traditional singers, Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh, who will also perform some of the songs associated with the pipes.
This is a true opportunity to see some great Irish piping and should not be missed.
